OMAHA — The doctor who helped lead the charge for Nebraska Medicine's biocontainment unit and treated Ebola patients in 2014 has died.
Dr. Phil Smith was the medical director of the Nebraska biocontainment unit in 2005.
He also established the Nebraska Infection Control Network in 1980 and was the chief of infectious diseases at UNMC in 1998.
The biocontainment unit grabbed the national spotlight in 2020 when it treated the first U.S. COVID-19 patients.
